Poor Footsman by Spicy Fingers
COLLIDE supports creative time for acclaimed local writer Spicy Fingers (recent publications include Black Emotions and Black Inspirations) to delve deeper into the archives and memories from the Handsworth riots in the 1980's. This fictional first develops longstanding collaboration with visual artist Colin Gabbidon, with the Poor Footsman raising a troubled yet vibrant dialogue from the streets to the page.

Spicy FingersPoor Footsman Spicy Fingers' journey to England from Jamaica as a young teenager has informed much of his creative practice, from the orally delivered tales describing his early life in Jamaica to his more recent written work. Influenced by such figures as Bob Marley, Lynton K Johnson, Louise Bennett and Steel Pulse, Spicy Fingers' work communicates a serious message of making positive changes to people's lives but with an element of comedy. Fingers method of creating characters that have broad appeal is to meditate on his characters, getting to know them intimately before putting pen to paper. In this way, characters take charge of their own narrative with the writer becoming merely a vehicle through which they can express themselves and allowing the creative process to flow more easily. Fingers has received acclaim and respect from local artists and the community who have been supportive and encouraging in his work. Fingers has also worked with Colin Gabbidon to produce a number of projects including illustrations for health promotion material sponsored by Aston Pride and The Birmingham NHS. |
