Private Face by Barbara Walker
![]()
Barbara Walker's first major solo Birmingham show, exhibits work which represents a personal and intimate view of a community from within, as she records the social and economic life of African - Caribbean people in Britain, especially in and around Birmingham, her home town. The paintings are specific to place, time and above all location, capturing inner city people in their personal environment and their engagement in ordinary daily activities: in church, the dance hall, the barber's shop and at home. She has also focussed on the elderly, a group who hold unique memories of the community as one of the earliest generations of people from the Caribbean to move to Britain.
Barbara received a commission, to assist production of supporting material, made available during April and May 2002.
This work is supported by a Creative Ambition Award, WMA
