For one afternoon and late into that evening three very different black women became allies in front of the video camera and the photographic camera. Expecting to be wined, dined and pampered for a night, they were there to put on a show and to be the show. To be viewed close up. To have their words listened to carefully. To be witty and clever. To be seen looking their best and be full of banter, and yet to bare their secrets and be vulnerable in being honest at the same time.
The BIG TALK exhibition is a collection of still images of the black women interviewed for the project. Bringing the mood of the Hollywood Golden Era forward in time so that these twenty-first century black women whose lifestyles are far removed from the white icons of those days can savour the glamour up close.
Today's predominantly stick-thin models hog the limelight and more than their fair share of attention in a never-ending self-obsessed parade. How good it is to see black women with big, curvaceous bodies looking great, enjoying themselves and feeling confident and sexy in front of the camera.
The BIG TALK images are representative of the large human shape, with an emphasis on fun and interaction.
